The Amazon Conservation Team (ACT) is a U.S.-based NGO that has been pioneering a biocultural, grassroots conservation approach in the American tropics for nearly three decades. ACT’s core mission is to partner with indigenous peoples and other traditional forest communities to protect tropical forests. We believe that supporting communities in self-determination, cultural resilience and territorial rights is one of the most effective ways to slow or neutralize the accelerating, linked threats of deforestation and climate change. Our three key strategies are Land (land tenure, community-based monitoring and territorial justice) Livelihoods (income generation, health, and infrastructure), and Governance (communication, traditional knowledge and leadership). ACT’s vision is to continuously work towards a future where healthy tropical forests and thriving local communities exist in harmonious relationship with each other, contributing to the well-being of humanity and the planet.
Since launching in 1996, ACT has established multiple country programs across greater Amazonia. ACT only works with communities that request to partner with us of their own accord.
