Scientific name: Sloanea grandiflora
Vern: boskuswe (Du); urucurana (BrP)
Local: châtaignier grand feuillé (FG); kakirio (GU); rafru-njannjan; raverinja (Sr)
Indig: tëpaimë (Tr)
Growth Form: Trees and shrubs
Order: Oxalidales
Family: Elaeocarpaceae
Notes: S. grandiflora is easily recognized in the field by its large, prominent plank buttresses and large, elliptic to elliptic-obovate leaves with irregularly dentate margins. Its ellipsoidal fruit capsules are densely covered in flexible, curled spines. Often co-occurring in the same wet tropical forest biotopes as S. latifolia, this species shares identical common names across several coastal and national dialects due to its similar vegetative appearance and fruit structure. S. latifolia generally exhibits a more strictly obovate leaf shape with more pairs of prominent secondary veins, and its fruit capsule spines are typically straighter and more rigid compared to the curled, flexible bristles of S. grandiflora.
