Notes: Caryocar nuciferum and Caryocar glabrum are both monumental canopy-emergent trees native to the primary terra firme forests of the Guiana Shield. While they belong to the same genus and share the classic opposite, trifoliate leaf pattern, they occupy distinctly different niches in both forest ecology and local use. C. nuciferum is a high-value NTFP due to its very large Sawari-nuts (ingi-noto in Suriname). The woody endocarp houses 2 to 4 kidney-shaped kernels that are rich, oily, and highly prized as delicious edible nuts. C. glabrum is an important timber species and not highly prized for its (smaller) fruits.
